I’m a bit sick of the alternate reality these YouTubers live in.

YouTube gig no longer paying? Get another job.

No transferrable skills, been out of work too long? Start with something like Uber driving.

Only got a 30-year old Renault? Food delivery might be an option.

I’m not a YouTuber, but nearing the end of an employment contract. These are the options I’ve considered – NOT grifting £25k so I can avoid getting a real job.

Wayne strikes again!

“What pizzas will be available on the barcadia menu and can I have mine without anchovies and olives and will there be a meat lovers pizza for all the carnivores?”

“Where will the ‘wall of games’ pledge be put in barcadia because it’s not very clear what it means and if there’s 100 names on it the font will be so small you won’t see it unless it’s massive like a1 paper size and 36 point comic sans font.”

“How many ppl can fit in the bar with all the arcade games because I don’t want to risk getting covid again if 100 ppl are packed in like sardines at the launch party and crisp crumbs flying everywhere while I am trying to enjoy a game of Mortal Kombat 2.”

“If the Kickstarter campaign fails can you go to the bank and take an extra £25000 loan for the business or have you already been turned down by the bank?”

tbh I’m surprised Nostalgia Turd hasn’t taken these comments down, but here’s the archive link anyways: https://archive.is/https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/nostalgianerd/barcadia-arcade-bar/comments

I dunno if I’m being a bit fucking slow here, but I don’t really get what it is they are opening. Is it like Arcade club, albeit on a much smaller scale with quick vegan food options. Or is it more a Wetherspoons with games albeit on a much smaller scale? If you are a gamer looks like there might be room for maybe 12 machines? (I could be wrong) You aren’t going to go there instead of the other arcade with more choice and freeplay. If you want vegan beer and vegan food specifically, it’s gonna have to be pretty damn good as many places do reasonably priced vegan options now.
I dunno, it feels like they are following a dream with no real thought as to whether it makes sense. If it was £25k of your own money you’d be going through your plan and costings with a fine toothcomb

I was vegan for 10 years, back to being a veggie and even I think the idea of a very niche menu is ludicrous. I can understand it if your ethics mean you can’t serve meat, but to me that kinds suggests your business idea is flawed. The landlord, electricity supplier and council don’t care about your ethics when you can’t pay your bills. Even big established companies are closing branches, banks are closing, Wetherspoons are closing. Such an arcade will be something people try once or twice.

Yeah I’m vegetarian too and welcome vegan options but I feel they’ve painted themselves into a corner here. There seem to be loads of bars and restaurants in the area, and vegan ones. Even the likes of Spoons do vegan options now, and reasonably priced with the beer and burger deals etc. To be fair, looking at the slice and dice menu, the food sounds lovely, it really does, but quite expensive. If Barcadia is going to be similar, I’d probably get food elsewhere first. You’d be hard pressed getting someone who isn’t a vegan to pay that.
I suppose what I’m saying in a long winded way is I don’t understand how they are going to make their money out of this once it’s open

I’ve been open and honest with my stance and reasons since the kickstarter was made public, and as a whole concept i just can’t see it being successful, firstly from a speciality standpoint and jumping on the vegan bandwagon might seem like a good money earner in the current climate, but from historic sales of the mc plant, impossible burger, and other vegan offerings show that after the initial interest surge, people tend to revert to their original lifestyle offerings, with flavour, texture and price being principle reasons for why they don’t continue purchasing.

The current Barcadia pricing for food yes is in line with some pub prices, but for London, not Norwich and especially not down princes road where cheaper offerings can be sought.

But regardless of food offerings you also have to consider the current location, while being in a relatively cheap business area of Norwich prime for cost effective development, it will also suffer from neighbouring business offerings and the clientèle that will establish. This also will have an adverse factor into security needs outside of the original bar staff scope for wages, as well as advertising to ensure the market is aware of the business and how different it is from the other established locations to redirect patronage.

Currently efforts for advertising locally have fallen on one local paper report 2 weeks ago, and 2 periods of coordinated social media tweeting to highlight its activity. Nothing more.

What the bar is currently relaying on is the currently celebrity stance for youtubers involved and those potentially associated with this, falsely implying that if you fund, there’s a chance you’ll meet for favourite youtubers and friends in a home location not just at an opening, but also on an infrequent basis. You’ll also be part of a unique list of individuals that’ll be celebrated by those influencer for taking the jump to help fund a community based effort.

As much as I’d like to believe this will be the case, a number of those involved have already indicated that they will not be frequenting beyond the original opening and outside of a signed wall, we have no clear indication of where this list will be displayed. Is it behind the bar? at the entrance? Outside the toilets?, far corner of the premises as a tickbox exercise that had to be included?

And what of the business plan? We don’t need to know the full ins and outs, but for anyone venture capital to support a business, a rough outline of available funds to support the endeavour through the first year should be made public, alongside a plan indicating milestones to ensure viable footfall continues for the first 12 months on the road to profitability, one that can be cross checked through project governance to ensure that the whole campaign is keeping in track to ensure the bar becomes a success and as implied, a focal point for retro gaming in Norwich.

Without this the whole thing just becomes one big ‘go fund me’ to cater to someone’s ambition to ‘run a vegan bar’ with no real risk or responsibility.

That’s why so many people have become vocally concerned, and those voices are raising alarm bells not to hinder, but to highlight faults in the current business model to enable action before we see another community business fall under before its time. Wasting further community goodwill and jeopardising any future campaigns by others.

If you look back at Nostalgia Nerd’s “I’ve Been Gone” pitch video he straight up tells you that he expects you to pay for his harebrained scheme at around the 03:00 mark: “All we need is a little bit of help but we don’t expect this from the goodness of your heart – well, maybe we do – but just in case that’s not good enough blah blah..”

They clearly think their combined YouTube celebrity star power deserves to translate directly into free business capital and for this alone they deserve to be mocked.

When people tell you who they are, believe them.

Nostalgia Knob has no shame when it comes to grifting. Six years ago he ran a successful gofundme campaign to buy himself a new PC. Link can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7_YVVXRnbEw

He would have you think he’s got respect for his audience, but I can see straight through him. He has nothing but contempt for his YT audience, puts on a friendly persona on camera but the complete opposite off-camera. He puts duplicate games/hardware sent in from his simp viewers on Ebay. He sees his YT as his right to make money out of his manipulated audience, pretty much like all the popular Youtubers!

He’s an irritating, arrogant, self-entitled BAAAAAAASTARD!

Careful now… unless you have evidence to back this up, this could be seen as defamatory.

(although in my honest person opinion I wouldn’t put it past him… but to be clear, this is my opinion and not a statement of fact)

I haven’t just thought this up. I think he even said this in one of his videos. One things for sure, he’s outright grifter as his gofundme pc video proves. No shame at all…

All YouTubers are at it. They are not going to hold on to the 5th Atari Falcon when they go for hundreds of pounds.

As a Yank who tweeted about Barcadia, no I’m not interested in traveling to Norwich only to give washed up YouTubers even more money. I can play plenty of games at home and I’m not interested in arcade games, I’d much rather play consoles like the Virtual Boy, PC Engine, and Mark III.

I do not think that £25k is enough, I bet they where hoping all the UK retro people would come out an support this. Fifty or even a hundred thousand is what they really want. While some of the questions might come across is trolling never the less they are all valid questions. Things like opening hours or policy regarding people playing after closing time are all valid and should have been addressed about before now. How lone before slice and dice moves into the location a month or two tops. At this point it will get funded with the help off a few last minute credit card pledges for the grand level !

Given the rather lacklustre rewards they are offering backers they might as well have just used used GoFundMe. I wonder if they will ask family and friends to back it and then give them their money back, that’s a common tactic for some kickstarters.

Duncan mate, you might want to step away for a bit, hearing your rage out over Peter’s response there seemed like a mountain out of a molehill, he is just a person afterall. Nothing he said is too extraordinary under the circumstances. I’m worried you might be going too far with this now and it’s beginning to stoop into negativity for negativity sake and not as a response to what was just a concern about grifting. It has gotten way too personal for that to be the main cause for concern.

I love the comment from NN on how free play bugs him as ‘the challenge is completely removed’
After reading that, I gave it some serious consideration and the only words I could come up with were ‘Oh fuck off’.

My tolerance of a good many retro YouTubers, who I have watched for some years now, is tanking and tanking fast, as I am getting more and more tired of seeing just how full of their own shit they are.

There are many, many smaller channels which deserve a looking than some of these older YouTubers and I can see some unsubscribing in my future of these tired, arrogant, over-opinionated ‘personalities’.

Exactly. If I’m hitting an old arcade game I want to coin-load my way through to play what I never did as a kid due to limited funds.
